- Private Equity to the fore in UK travel sector
Private equity buyers have been very prominent in travel sector deals in 2014, including investments in Riviera Travel, Scott Dunn, Travel Counsellors, Elegant Resorts and Stella Travel. This is a continuation of the trend established in recent years which saw private equity investment in companies such as Audley Travel, Great Rail Journeys and Andante Travels (advised by Atkinson Lambert). Speaking at a recent Travel Trade Gazette business seminar Atkinson Lambert partner Stewart Lambert said “This momentum started picking up about two, three years ago where people saw the recovery in the UK economy starting to kick on… you tend to have a magnifying effect within the travel industry in my view.”

Kuoni group, the Swiss company, has announced the sale of its tour operating businesses worldwide, including its upscale UK long-haul operation, based in Dorking, Surrey, and a number of other well known UK brands such as Kirker, Carrier, Voyages Jules Verne and CV Villas.

Atkinson Lambert partner Richard Atkinson has been appointed to the board of Bath based cultural tours specialist and AITO member, Group Travel Connection, trading as Heritage Group Travel.

Surrey based European tour operator and travel agency Castaways has been sold to Glentop Limited, trading as Traveltime. The owner of Castaways was advised by Atkinson Lambert on the retirement sale of his business.

Respected Twickenham travel agency Edwin Doran’s Travel World has been sold to Nigerian owned Peacock Travel and Tours. The owners of Edwin Doran’s Travel World were advised by Atkinson Lambert.

Atkinson Lambert acted as advisor to the owner of Andante Travels, Annabel Lawson, on the recent sale of her highly regarded archaeology tours business to a management buy-in investor backed by Panoramic Growth Equity.
